Sophia Touchstones: Why They Get Returned and How to Pass on the Resubmit
Published: August 26, 2026
You finished the Challenges. You passed the Milestone. Then the Touchstone comes back with a score that does not match the paper you thought you wrote. The comment says you missed required elements. You open the file and those elements are sitting right there.
That is the most common Sophia stall. Touchstones are not auto-graded quizzes. They are project-based papers scored by a human against a rubric. One missing heading one thin source or one reflection question answered in a single sentence can drop the score enough that you burn your only redo and still sit below the course average you need.
This guide explains what a Touchstone actually is why graders send work back and how to use that one resubmit without wasting another $99 membership month.
What a Sophia Touchstone Actually Is
Sophia’s own help docs call Touchstones project-based assessments. You apply what the unit taught. The file is checked for originality then a grader scores it by hand. You may not recycle a paper from another Sophia course or from a class at a different school. The submission has to be unique to this course.
A few rules that surprise people:
- You usually cannot submit a unit’s Touchstone until you have passed the earlier assessments in that unit.
- There is no minimum score on a single Touchstone. You still have to complete every Touchstone and finish the course at about 70% overall.
- You get one redo per Touchstone if you need a higher score.
- Grading is not instant. Turnaround is listed on the Touchstone instructions page and it can eat days of a monthly membership.
Challenges and Milestones can feel easy. Touchstones are the part that behaves like a real writing assignment. English Composition Introduction to Ethics Public Speaking and some business courses are built around them. That is why students who breeze through Psychology still get stuck on Comp I.
If you are new to the platform our Sophia success strategies cover membership pacing and transfer checks. This post is only about the written piece that gets returned.
Why Touchstones Get Returned
Graders are not scoring “pretty writing.” They are matching your file to a checklist. Most returns come from one of these gaps.
The rubric row is missing even if the idea is in there
A grader who is moving fast will dock a criterion that is not labeled. If the instructions ask for a thesis a reflection paragraph and two scholarly sources those pieces need to be obvious. Buried in a long paragraph they can look “missing” even when you wrote them.
Treat the rubric as a checklist not a suggestion. Open it next to the paper. Check off every row before you submit.
Word count formatting and source count are easy points to lose
Students argue about analysis quality. Graders often ding the mechanical rows first: page length font headings number of sources APA-style citations or a missing title page. Those rows are the cheapest points on the sheet. Over-deliver slightly on them so a picky grader has nothing easy to cut.
Description instead of application
Touchstones ask you to apply a concept. A summary of the tutorial is not enough. If the prompt says analyze a workplace scenario or argue a position you need causes evidence and a clear conclusion. The same gap shows up later in Capella FlexPath rubric scoring. Pretty sentences that never hit the verb on the rubric still come back.
Originality flags
Sophia checks uniqueness. Pasting a paper from another course or a recycled essay is a fast rejection. Heavy quoting can look like you did not process the material. Paraphrase and cite. Keep quotes short.
Inconsistent graders
This complaint is real. Two students can submit similar work and get different scores depending on who opens the file. One grader is reasonable. The next is strict on formatting reflection questions or source integration. You cannot pick your grader. You can make every required element impossible to miss so a strict read still finds it.
You Only Get One Redo
Sophia’s course-rigor FAQ is clear: you may resubmit a Touchstone once based on the feedback to raise the score. After that you are stuck with the number unless a Learning Coach grants something extra which is not the default.
That is why the first resubmit cannot be a vibe rewrite. It has to answer the comments row by row. A full new paper that ignores the feedback can score worse than the original.
Also remember the course math. A low Touchstone does not fail you by itself. A low Touchstone plus average Milestones can pull the overall score under 70%. The redo exists to protect that average. Use it for the rows that actually moved the number.
How to Read the Feedback Without Starting Over
Do the same mapping we tell Capella students to use on returned assessments. Sophia comments are shorter but the method is identical.
1. List every criterion the grader marked down. Ignore the rows that already scored well.
2. Copy the rubric language for those rows. That wording is the target not your memory of the prompt.
3. Find the place in your paper that was supposed to cover each row. If you cannot point to it the content was missing. If you can point to it the content was too thin or too hidden.
4. Turn each comment into a task. “Needs more analysis” becomes “add causes evidence and a practice implication in paragraph 3.” “Missing sources” becomes “add two current citations and a matching reference list.”
5. Leave passing sections alone. Rewriting a strong introduction can create a new gap.
If the comment is vague you can submit a request to Sophia’s Touchstone Grading Team with specifics. Compare the comment to the exact sentence in your file. Emotional replies do not help. A calm point-by-point note sometimes does.
How to Pass on the Resubmit
Work one flagged row at a time.
- Add a heading that matches the rubric language if the grader could not find the section.
- Bold a thesis or reflection answer only if the instructions allow it. The goal is visibility not decoration.
- Put sources next to the claim they support. A pile of citations at the end of a paragraph looks like padding.
- Keep the paper unique. Do not paste in a new block from another course to “fix” originality. Rewrite the weak section in your own words.
- Save the final file plus a copy of the rubric version you used. That pair is your evidence if you need to follow up with the grading team.
Then stop. One clean resubmit beats two rushed files. While you wait for the second grade keep working Challenges in the next unit if the course lets you. Idle time during grader turnaround is how membership months disappear. That is the same clock we plan around when students ask for someone to take my Sophia Learning classes.
The Membership Cost of a Returned Touchstone
Sophia is cheap per credit only when courses close inside the month you already paid for. A Touchstone in the queue for several days plus a redo plus another wait can push a single course into a second $99 cycle.
Plan backward:
- When does this membership renew?
- How long does this course’s Touchstone grading usually take? Check the instructions page.
- Do you have more than one Touchstone left?
If two written pieces are still open and renewal is in a week you need a sequence not hope. Submit the first Touchstone as soon as the unit unlocks. Use the wait to finish Challenges for the next unit. Do not batch every written assignment for the last four days of the month.
Students stacking Sophia before a WGU or UMPI term feel this pressure the most. Credits only help if they post before the next term starts. Confirm transfer first using the same checklist in our Sophia Reddit questions roundup then treat Touchstone turnaround as part of the calendar not an afterthought.
Common Mistakes on the Redo
Rewriting the whole paper. You have one attempt. Do not invent new problems in sections that already scored.
Fixing tone instead of the missing row. A nicer introduction will not restore a source-count criterion.
Adding random quotes to look academic. Originality checks and graders both punish this.
Resubmitting the same file with a new title. If the comment named a gap the file has to change in that place.
Waiting in panic instead of working the next unit. Other assessments can still move while a Touchstone is with a grader.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to pass every Touchstone with a high score? No. There is no required minimum on each one. You must complete them all and keep the course average at or above about 70%. A weak Touchstone can still sink that average which is why the one redo matters.
Can I submit a Touchstone before I finish the unit’s Milestone? Usually no. Sophia requires you to pass the previous assessments in the unit first. Check that course’s Touchstone page.
How many times can I resubmit? Once per Touchstone in normal cases. Extra attempts are not guaranteed.
Why did my friend get a higher score on a similar paper? Different graders. Make required elements obvious so a strict read still finds them.
Will a returned Touchstone fail the whole Sophia course? Not by itself. It can delay you and it can pull the overall percentage down. The delay is what costs money because of monthly billing.
Should I email the grader? Use Sophia’s Touchstone Grading Team form if the score looks wrong after you compared comments to the rubric. Include the course name Touchstone number and where the “missing” content actually sits in the file.
